CHAPTER 7

Friday evening

The heat was waning as the evening sun sank below the horizon and Dagmar couldn’t wait for the evening to be over. Normally he was talkative, cracking jokes, putting everyone at ease, but not tonight. He was self–conscious of everyone he believed to be watching him, Cora, and Jeffrey—and speculating who was going to be saying vows on Sunday.

People and tables were scattered between the porch and the lawn, enjoying the mixture of food and conversation. Besides the Wilerson women bringing covered dishes of food, Reuben had provided a beef brisket from the winter supply in the cellar, and Darcie had peeled and mashed a mountain of potatoes. At times, Reuben and Darcie got along fine, and other times they sounded like two kids, each fighting to get their own way. Interesting to see Tate had latched on to Reuben this evening, probably further irking Darcie.

Isaac Connely from the Cross C Ranch sat with Cate Wilerson and Cora’s parents while they ate the main meal. Then they moved around to the usual arrangement—men together in one spot, and women in their own group while eating their desserts. Dagmar ate only one piece of Millie’s fabulous lemon layer cake, although normally he’d have taken at least one slice of Cate’s apple pie too, but he didn’t want to look like a pig this evening.

The Levi fellow seemed nice enough, politely answering the many questions about his life on his family’s farm in Pennsylvania. Mr. Elison quizzed him on farming practices back East, as he was interested in turning over part of the ranch to plant corn. Levi looked around the group before answering, stating it looked like farm ground ended east of Abilene, and this part of the state was best used for grazing. Mr. Elison argued when Jacob and Noah agreed with Levi’s assessment, as that was one of the reasons the owner had hired Levi—to make the ranch more profitable with new livestock and crops. Isaac offered to take him on a tour of the area so Mr. Elison could see the lay of the land, and show him why it was best for grazing instead of planting grain crops.

Lyle and Jeffrey carried on their own conversation, ignoring the Wilersons. Carl was attentive to everyone, trying to straddle the fence so to speak. Through bits of conversation, it seemed Carl had tried to keep Lyle out of trouble while they lived here, instead of him being a trouble maker, too. Carl was working with his father now in the family business. It didn’t appear as though Lyle had any job, and was still carousing around with his friends.

Dagmar tried to listen to both groups’ conversations, worrying he was going to miss something he should know, but that was hard to do.

“I forgot to tell you that Mae is about to have another child,” Dagmar strained to catch the conversation at the women’s group when Cora’s mother spoke.

“This will make a dozen children!” Cora said with a laugh
